What Sports Leaders Can Learn from Warren Buffett

I’m launching a new Gainor Sports content series focused on translating lessons from some of the world’s greatest builders, operators and business leaders into practical ideas for the business of sports.

First up: Warren Buffett.

Four principles stand out:

1. GIVE GREAT OPERATORS ROOM TO OPERATE
Buffett is known for giving proven leaders extraordinary autonomy. The sports lesson: hire talented people, make the objective clear, give them authority and resist the urge to overmanage. If you hire a .400 hitter, don’t redesign their swing.

2. THINK IN DECADES, NOT SEASONS
Sports naturally operates around seasons, quarters and annual budgets. Buffett thinks about what can compound for decades.

The better question isn’t just, “Will this help us this year?”

It’s: “Will this make the organization stronger 5, 10 or 20 years from now?”

3. VALUE CREATION > GROWTH
More revenue. More partners. More events. More employees. More impressions.

Bigger doesn’t automatically mean better.

The goal should be to create more value from the resources you invest, not simply to become larger.

Sometimes the best growth strategy is doing fewer things significantly better.

4. THINK LIKE AN OWNER
Buffett asks managers to operate as if they own 100% of the business, it is their family’s only asset and they cannot sell it for 100 years. Imagine applying that mindset to a team, league, venue or sports property:

Would we still make this decision if our family owned the organization for the next century?

That changes how you think about people, spending, partnerships, fan trust, reputation and the brand.

The common thread? Empower exceptional people. Think long term. Create real value. Act like an owner.
